Founder & Creator of Balanced Curriculum
Dave began his teaching career in the Cleveland Public School system as a high school English teacher after receiving a bachelor's in English and a masters degree in education from Allegheny College (Meadeville, PA). He was known for his wild ties and knack for getting through to hard to reach kids. His interest in curriculum grew from his time as a teacher and became a formal area of study for his doctoral studies at the University of Pittsburgh. After receiving his PhD, he went on to work for Research for Better Schools where he published his first book in 1981, "Effective Schools and Classrooms - A Research Based Approach". To date, it has over 200 citations. He honed the Balanced Curriculum approach while working as the Assistant Superintendant for the K-8 division of Red Bank Public Schools in Red Bank, NJ. Dave was recruited to the Comer School Development Program at Yale University in 1996 where his work contributed to strengthening public schools all over the country. He was the first person to develop a web-based tool for curriculum alignment and served as one of its early advocates. Dave retired in 2014 after publishing 4 additional books and dozens of articles about curriculum. He remains an active contributor to ABC Education Consultants, LLC.
